![]() Blue indicating NO2 levels are low - Yellow indicating NO2 levels are high. Air Quality Index (AQI) Calculation The Air Quality Index is based on measurement of particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10), Ozone (O 3), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO 2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO 2) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions. Most of the stations on the map are monitoring both PM 2. The NO2 scale in the videos indicate pollution levels. Rising to the climate challenge will involve a mix of policy, technology and international cooperation and we believe that insights about air quality at the community level can help support both local and global action on climate. Below we’ve highlighted some of our findings for these regions with heat maps showing Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) levels across three regions. Over 195 nations will gather in Bonn for the COP23 UN Climate Climate Change conference this week. We're just beginning to understand what's possible with this hyper-local information and today, we’re starting to share some of our findings for the three California regions we’ve mapped: the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, and California’s Central Valley (the Street View cars drove 100,000 miles, over the course of 4,000 hours to collect this data!) Scientists and air quality specialists can use this information to assist local organizations, governments, and regulators in identifying opportunities to achieve greater air quality improvements and solutions. ![]() PurpleAir sensors are easy to install, requiring a power outlet and WiFi. Using a new generation of laser particle counters to provide real time measurement of (amongst other data), PM1.0, PM2.5 and PM10. Earlier this year, we shared the the first results of this effort with pollution levels throughout the city of Oakland. A proven air quality monitoring solution for home enthusiasts and air quality professionals alike. To better understand air quality on a more local level, we began working with our partner Aclima - to map air pollution across California using Google Street View cars-equipped with air quality sensors. You can browse for sites by county, air basin, or air district. These sites are currently operating throughout California, and are audited by the Quality Assurance Section (QAS). Despite seemingly optimistic ratings, Los Angeles’s air pollution is among the worst in the United States, both for PM2. ![]() Monthly averages in 2019 varied from AQI 32 (good) in February to AQI 64 (moderate) in November. Most air pollution is measured at a city level, but air quality can change block by block, hour by hour and day to day. An interactive map of air monitoring sites in California. Los Angeles air quality averages a US AQI or air quality index rating of moderate.
